Japan House garden talk

Spring is really here at Japan House and the gardens are becoming alive with with color again!  It is very fitting then, that the designer and builder of the Japan House gardens, Jim Bier, will be speaking at our monthly Cultural Enrichment Group meeting next Wednesday, April 4, 2007 at 5:00 p.m.  The talk will be open to everyone, as always, and will be followed by tea.  We hope you can join us!

Japan House in March

Spring seems to be around the corner (hopefully!) and things are getting busy here at Japan House!

Don't forget to be here tomorrow, Wedensday, March 7 at 5:00 for a koto performance.

Then join us on Saturday, March 31 for a bus trip to the Indianapolis Museum of Art. We will have a guided tour of their newly installed Asian Galleries, lunch at Puck's Restaurant and an afternoon of tours of the gardens or time on your own. It should be a wonderful day. Download the form below or call us for more information at (217) 244-9934.

Finally, don't forget to visit Japan House sometime during the month to view the dolls on display for Hinamatsuri (Doll Festival).

Koto performance

It is time again for our monthly Volunteer Cultural Enrichment Group meeting on Wednesday, March 7 at 5:00 p.m. We are most fortunate to have Anne Prescott joining us for a performance on the koto, a 13-stringed harp-like Japanese musical instrument. Anne is currently Associate Director of the Center for East Asian and Pacific Studies here at UIUC but she is also an accomplished musician. Anne studied koto with Ando Masateru in the Miyagi School of the Ikuta-ryu. She began playing koto at Cornell College (Iowa, U.S.A.) and she visited Japan for the first time in 1982 as a member of the Cornell College Koto Ensemble. She has a Ph.D. in ethnomusicology from Kent State University (Ohio, U.S.A) and her dissertation was on the koto composer Miyagi Michio-his inventions, innovations, and compositions. She plays shamisen as well. Anne lived in Japan for over 7 years and has produced the liner notes for the recordings of traditional music by Kyoto Records. We are so lucky that she has generously offered to share her talent with our group!

As always, the program will begin at 5:00 and will be followed by an informal reception. All are welcome---do join us!
